What are the NCAA DI limitations on numbers of coaches for Cross Country and Track & Field?
What counts in that number (full-time, part-time, grad asst, volunteer)?
Do they combine men's and women's programs, or give a coaching limit for each gender?
Does anyone know this?

A program can have 3 paid coaches. I think this includes full time and part time, but not grad-assistants, volunteers, and the like. If the program is combined men's and women's, then they can have 6 full time coaches.

According to my sources, which may be dated, it's two paid coaches per team (M/W) and two volunteers for a total of four. A combined M&W program can put them together and have four paid and four volunteer for a total of eight. This may be one reason why, on the whole, women-only programs don't tend to be particularly competitive at conference meets.

So if I read that right, a program that sponsors xc/ITr/OTr can have three volunteer coaches per gender that can work with athletes from all three sports throughout the year. So a total men's and women's xc, indoor track and outdoor track program could have 6 volunteer coaches affiliated with those programs. Is that correct?
What about restrictions on graduate assistants? Are they considered paid, volunteer or a different catagory with different rules?
A single gender program can have three (3) paid coaches and three volunteer assistants (one XC, one indoor, one outdoor).
A combined program (M/W) can have six (6) paid coaches and six volunteer assistants.
Graduate Assistants are considered "paid" coaches if they participate in coaching activities. Some of the bigger programs uses graduate assistants for administrative duties and no coaching, thus not effecting their limitations.

By the way, my source is pages 62-64 of the 2004-05 NCAA Division I Manual.
So with a program like Florida State University, they list:
6 paid coaches
1 volunteer coach
2 graduate assistants
2 administrative assistants
Either they are violating the rules, or their 2 graduate assistants are the same as their 2 administrative assistants, since GA's are supposed to count as paid coaches.
Is that right or is there another explanation for this?

The two graduate assistants probably don't coach, or one of the coaches that appear to be "paid" coaches may actually be a volunteer. I know a few years back we had a coach on our staff who, due to a particularly nice financial situation, volunteered, but worked as a full-time assistant. Call Bob Braman and ask him.
