Weirdest thing an opposing coach has said to you after a race?

Appropriate response would have been, "Yeah? And if my aunt had balls she'd be Caster Semenya."

Sounds like a very knowledgeable coach- had second place run faster, they could have won. You should have picked his brain for more nuggets of wisdom.

He's just messing with your head for the next race. Instead of running as well or better, and beating his guy *again*, he wants you to be thinking about even splits. Since you were first, there's no need to do anything different next time. Just run your own race.

Back in high-school (about 20 years ago) - I finished 2nd in a pre-season XC race to opposing coaches athlete (the first time I ever lost to this kid). Opposing coach says - ya, kid has been working really hard over the summer. It shows that you haven't been working as hard as last year.

wtf - I was working harder than ever and he wouldn't know if I wasn't anyways.

Thankfully I never lost to that kid again.

Yeah. Whether it's fat people discussing yesterday's football game, or some coach talking about a race, there are few regularly uttered comments as vapid as "you only won because the other guy did/didn't do X."

That's what winning is. Doing things better than the other guy and finishing before him as a result.

I am assuming this is High school. What sort of "coach" shiat talks a kid? That is all sorts of pathetic behavior.

Better splits still equals the same time. Perhaps you should have explained that to him.

Here's something I said naively to a teammate that turned out to be funny.

We had a freshman girl whom we knew was going to be a studette. At the first CC meet, she's super concerned about the course. This meet had some pretty high level runners there, maybe even the previous year's girl's champ. Well, I told her not to worry and follow the leaders. She ends up winning by close to a minute. Good thing she studied the course. She didn't win State CC, some other freshman studette won that, but our girl did take State Mile title in track.

Studette? For real?

Total Dick...if he says something to you again after a nice win, smile and tell him that he really motivated you with that "better splits" comment.

He said that after I won the Florida Intercollegiate Indoor Championships over 3000m at Florida in 8:28.

He was right, but if he never said it, not sure if I would have ever tried at BU a couple of weeks later.

If the other team would have scored more points than your team did by the end of the game, then the other team would have won.

That is a logical and accurate statement. Not very useful though.

A long Time ago, during a HS dual meet, I had an Assistant coach heckle me for the first three laps of the 1600m. He kept telling me I was going to lose and and the his two runners were going to crush me on the last lap. On the back stretch of the final lap when I had opened up 50 meters on his two runners, his heckling turned into "They're gonna get you in the 3200".

Should have responded with if the other runner had a better coach he would have run better splits and thrown in no offense.

Instead of congratulating you he was beeboppin and scattin all over you! Should've zinged him with, "the jerkstore called they're running out of you!"
