4:45 per mile for 10 miles for Abdi. 4:45 for 26.2 miles for Tergat.

4:45 per mile for 10 miles for Abdi. 4:45 for 26.2 miles for Tergat.
The state of U.S. distance running.
ur comparing a midseason race (not peak form) to a world record attempt and accomplishment. Just dumb.
It was also a different course against different competition. Abdi did what he needed to do to win...
And?
You can run FASTER than that?
The state of US distance running complaining
how did tergat do in athens again? What about the state of us distance running in the olympic marathon?
we lost, to some no name brazilian.
Note.(sorry in advance to any brazilians, or fans of brazilian athletics.. This post was meant as a joke.)
Dude, give tergat some credit... he's freaking amazing. I don't think abdi should be ashamed in his 10 mile pace at all.
Isn't the American Record around 46:15 or something? That is just under 4:40 a mile, which when you think of it, also isn't extremely great compared to Tergat. Basically, the fastest American anytime isn't a shining star at the 10 mile distance. It's not exactly the most common distance and our true best guys are training for the track or for marathons.
Thats right around Tergats half-marathon record is it not?
perhaps not "extremely great".
but not bad, given that tergat pretty much owns that distance.
And exactly how often is the 10 mile race done? Once a year, maybe? I'm sure Abdi's focus for the last 6 months was this race, so much so that he centered all of his training around preperation for a 10 mile race, and yesterday he peaked for the spring. Please. Tergat is a fantastic distance runner. Leave it at that. Just because one 10 mile race was won at his marathon race pace doesn't say anything about the "state of american distance running". Chances are, you're some pathetic Brit who's only chance for happiness is to rip on the Americans.
Am I the only who thought Olympic Gold Medalist Stefano Baldini is Italian? This "no-name" won bronze in the marathon world champs in '01 and '03, and won the half-marathon world champs in '96. He also ran a sub-2:10 marathon every year from 1997 through 2004, except 1999 when he did not run a marathon. Sure, he wasn't a favorite - but he also isn't what many would call an unknown.
Bronze Medalist and Pierre de Coubertin medal winner Vanderlei de Lima, however, is Brazilian.
So, either Abdi's clean and Tergat isn't, or Abdi's stuff isn't as good as Tergat's, right?
I was impressed with the depth of the results.
Don't think the standard was that bad.
I can understand the argument about Meb getting the silver, validating the U.S.'s place in international marathoning.
But Abdi not being peaked or the 10 mile distance not being run often are incredible excuses. Is Abdi a few weeks away from maintaining that pace for a marathon? Is he another couple of 10 mile races from running 45:00 flat?
I'm not saying he has to be the best in the world or at Tergat's level, but I think the fair response is that Tergat's that much better than most of our runners. Not that it's the distance isn't run often or we're still a few weeks away from running fast.
"but I think the fair response is that Tergat's that much better than most of our runners."[/quote]
Better than MOST US runners. Try better than any US runners ever.
Abdi's 10 mile run was very good but do bare in mind they'll be going quicker (or very close to) through 10 miles at London on Sunday.
The best marathon runners will go through 10miles relatively close to their PB.

hahaha
That is completely stupid analogy.
Jon Brown has run his last few 10 mile races in high 47's (like the 2003 Cherry Blossom), and posts a similar 10k time to Abdi.
Lets see, Jon Brown has finished 4th in the last two Olympic marathons.......where was Tergat? Abdi can be a world-class marathoner, he has the perfect build and form for the event
