Late 30s adult onset swimmer here. About a decade of casual triathlon and fitness swimming experience. Decent flipturns and bilateral breathing rhythm.
I swam 3000 yds continuous in 25 yd pool just under 45 minutes this morning. 1:30 per 100 yards. Effort was at elevation of 5200 feet. I felt controlled and smooth but don't think I could swim significantly faster right now over that distance.
Ironman Swim is about 4200 yds and requires 1:25 per 100 yards to break 1 hour. How feasible would it be for me to break 1 hour in an Ironman swim at low elevation with wetsuit on?
Ive done a number of shortcourse triathlons so I am reasonably competent at sighting and dealing with pack swimming.
Wondering if anyone has any benchmark workouts to recommend for sub 1 Hr IM swim attempt.
I currently rotate workouts through a long swim of 2000-3000 yds, 8-10 x 200 w 20 secs rest, 10-15 x 100 w 20 secs rest, 8-12 x 50 Fast on the minute, plus a cruise-tempo swim of 600-1200 yds.
I do a moderate amount of drill work during warm-up and cooldown.
Right now my shortcourse yard "prs" are
50- 29 seconds from deck dive
100- 64 seconds from deck dive
200- 2:25 from push
400- 5:15 from push
Im going to try and better my 200 and 400 prs at the end of this month and honestly feel like 2:20 for 200y and 5 flat for 400y are in reach. I know this isn't slowtwitch but would appreciate any advice.
