When should I stop lifting light weights before a big race. Is 2 weeks a good time if I've been doing them every other day?

You don't necessarily stop them, but reduce to maintenance levels about 2 weeks before racing periods. This might be a cutback of 25-50% or more in terms of volume, but the same intensity. You might do a weight session about 5 days before a big race; I wouldn't lift within 2 days of a race, as some recovery is needed.
