Look on LetsRun and you see all these threads, "how much do I need to run to get to a 16 minute 5k" or "critique my training plan for a 4:10 1500." The idea of seeking out advice and improvement is great, but the American obsession with goal setting, especially SMART goals, needs to die.
Your training should be dictated by what times you have run in the past, not your pipe dreams. The body doesn't know "Goal pace" in workouts. Goals are useful for very new runners who have trouble committing and staying motivated. But they have no place in the training plan of a SERIOUS competitive runner.
Goal setting is another manifestation of the greedy get rich quick hangup that caused the American dream to collapse.
