What do you think about running a half marathon in marathon pace every or every other week, as part of training for marathon (sub 3)? Would it do more damage than good?

This can be a good workout. I do something like that as part of a 18-22 mile long run. What is your mpw like? As long as its at least 60 it would probably do more good than damage.
Just go ahead and do it and see how it works.
A few years ago I ran 2 times a week for 6 months avg. 15 miles per run. Most weeks one of those runs was a race. I didn't run a marathon but ran a good 30k at 6:45 pace. It finally just got too hard mentally to do those runs.
At least for me, much over ten miles at MP, solo becomes a pretty hard effort. I would be concerned with recovery and the impact of this effort on other runs every week.

I think it's too far. An hour at marathon pace every week or two would be more like it.
