Last night I didn't eat or drink within 2 hours of training and I ran better than usual (and felt better than usual). Is not drinking (water) for the 2 hours before bad?

I would say so. You should sip water all day, even in the two hours leading up to a run. Having an energy drink of some kind (whatever you prefer) would be better in the hour before. Your body will absorb it better than water. Palin water can leave you bloated but know you body and experiment but be careful. You need to fuel the body to run!
I wonder if maybe I've been drinking too much, though. I tend to drink water without thinking, possibly 3 to 4 litres a day. Would a half juice/half water mix be the same as an energy drink? (I don't like how artifical they taste.)
I had the same problem. Was drinking too much water, felt bloated and think I flushed my system off everything. (think that Dwain Chambers complained of this??) I try to drink no more than a litre and a half of plain water a day but I also drink half juice/half water. Or juice concentrate with water. I add a pinch of salt to the juice/water drink. This will get it into your system quicker. I don't touch the energy drinks much, may have the Lucozade water everynow and then, but don't like the taste of them that much. I may eat a banana in the hour leading up to a run. It's as much as experimenting and finding hat works for you. Also depending on the weather as well, you will lose more fluid during hot days than cold ones, this depends where you live of course. Here in England we don't have to worry too much about hot weather! Hope that is helpful?
Forgot to say, I alos drink three to four cups of coffee a day! Maybe a bit too much. Trying to limit myself to 2 cups at most! I find that a cup of coffee a bout two hours before a run helps.
Please post pics before and after eating... ..you know...bikini or track clothing...After you do this we can help...
Research has been done on this. Your body does not immediately absorb all the fluid you drink. A good rule of thumb is that any fluid you drink within two hours of the race will still be sloshing around in your intestines rather than having been absorbed. So your trial run was in fact almost ideal. If you are thinking about a long run or a marathon, it is also a good idea to drink (in the same volume you would in a race) a bit of fluid (water or electrolyte solution) about ten minutes before you start the race. One for the road.

I only had a banana!
In all seriousness, I will try and experiment with different things... I think leaving 2 hours from eating/drinking before every session might be a bit much.
HAHA!! Well, looks like the research speaks for itself.
Ha Ha very good! Think the water was making you a bit bloated as well
About water sloshing around during training - I have experienced this, and it's what I'm trying to avoid.
I actually run the 800 and my main concern is before track training sessions and before races. So are you saying it's pointless to drink 2 hours before because it doesn't get absorbed? What sometimes happens is because I'm nervous, I drink a lot before while I'm warming up.. I may try to stop doing this..
Damn a woman with a good sense of humor...great comeback
Well, you didn't think I was going to post real pictures, did you? They don't exist, before anyone gets any bright ideas!
just sip small amounts. I get nervous before races and alwys thinking I haven't drunk enough fluid.
