Shalane Flanagan OUT of 2017 Boston Marathon

I really like effort Shalane puts into her races. She will be missed at Boston

Wow, how did she break her back?! That certainly can't be a running thing........?

Crazy that Japan's 5000 record is only 13:08 considering they have had tons of kids under 14 in high school.

I knew something was up when she didn't race in Japan, despite even traveling there to race. It could be from running-she could have a stress fracture in her back. That's a real bummer, was hoping to see her at Boston but hope she gets better soon!

That's too bad. I am in a big time funk having to back off running due to an achilles injury- I cant imagine how bummed out a competitor like Flanagan has to be not being able to race.

Broken back? How???

Any scoop on whether it is cross training related? Crossfit? Weight Lifting?

She posted "I fractured a bone in my low back training through a stretch of snowy weather in Portland, OR."

From her twitter today. Sounds like it was from training, although running in snow/ice can definitely cause compensations/altering gait, etc. that's too bad, I hope she heals quickly!

Tim Broe suffered a lower back stress fracture in 2003 as well.

WHY was she sledding on a trashcan lid in the first place? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard for an elite athlete to do.

It's strange, she blames the winter weather, but they are quite mysterious about what exactly happened. Why not just say that she fell?
