2:30 unless you are big and fat, in which case it should be a bit quicker to indicate a 5:30.

I would say much faster than 2:30 more like 2:23 because here are my PRS

Your post makes no sense. Anyway to the OP, at the very minimum I would think you would need a 2:35 but realistically closer to 2:25.

I did it on 2:38. To the guy who said 2:30: Really? If someone is at runner weight and more distance oriented, they could pull of 5:10 on that.

I'm a girl who is strictly a distance runner and when I broke 5:30 for the first time (5:27 1600m) my 800m PR was a 2:36. I'm not very good at anything under a mile and I get better as the distance increases. So I guess the absolute bare minimum for a 5:30 mile is 2:40.

The girls that I have coached that have run around 5:30 normally ran around 2:30 give or take a couple of seconds.

An aerobic monster could probably do it off a 2:40 but not very likely for most.

I ran 5:27 the other year, around the same time as a 67 quarter. Never did a raced or time trial 800, but I bet I could have done 2:20-2:25 or so.

FWIW McMillan lines up well with these times.

66.9 400 = 2:26 800 = 5:27 mile

My 800m PR was 2:08 when I broke 5:30 in the mile for the first time.

That would be for a 1600, not a mile. Try 2:44.07.

There is no right answer to this question. I had an 800 of 2:05 and could prob still not or barely break 5:30 - but I was a sprinter. You will get a better sense if you know your sprint (100m) and over-distance (5-10k) pr.

I was an 800m runner and did it off mid 2:2x, so I'd say a distance oriented person is probably more like 2:32.

People saying 2:40 are probably closer to the actual "minimum", but that's for a very aerobically developed person, which few people chasing their first sub 5:30 are.

But he's a self-diagnosed hobbyjogger which means he might be older and therefore may be aerobically developed. I was a sub-3 hobbyjogging marathoner in my late 40's when I started hitting some all comer meets. Best I ran was 67.7, 2:29, 4:55 (1500), 5:26 (mile) so a 2:30 to 2:33 sounds about right.
