Having a skim through editions 2 and 3 last night, one thing which jumped out at me is the lack of emphasis on hill training in DRF.
If I remember rightly, Daniels does mention that it is reasonable to switch some reps workouts for hills, but he doesn't really elaborate a great deal on exactly what one would do.
I ran a few weeks including hill sessions last autumn, and I felt I really benefited; so I'm keen to include them again, but I don't wish to stray too far from Daniels basic structure; so I'm thinking of replacing the rep workouts with hills. Has anyone here had any experiance of this before?
Another reason for doing it this way is the lack of regular track access; and running 200m and 400m reps just doesn't work quite as well on the roads for me.
How would one go about converting a workouts such as those below, in to hill sessions? Presumably you would just convert the distance/pace into time, and run fast/hard for that period, with long recoveries? My R-pace on the flat would be circa 5:10 according to the VDOT tables
5x (200R + 200jg + 200R + 200jg + 400R + 400jg) ???
10x (400m R + 400m jg) ???
I get the impression I'm probably over thinking this; but would there be any downside to converting a whole phase of Rep training in to hills, and running it that way? Hills just make a lot more sense to me, than trying to run 200m reps on the road
Be interesting to hear any suggestions and opinions
