I ran 2:38 for the 1k this past weekend. I went 28, 58, 1:30, 2:05 and then 2:38.
What should I be splitting and what can I run with even splits. Solo effort by the way.

If I were you, I'd go out in 30-31 and try to be even the whole way. Aim for sub 2:35, potentially a little better. You really gotta press from 400-800 to pull it off. You ran a 35 second lap between 600-800 and that killed your time.

You could've run 2:33.35.
1000m is probably the lowest distance where even splits is optimal for most runners.
I think you're still better off negative splitting, just approach it more conservatively.
An 800 runner who would normally split 56-58 would probably fare best by going out in 28 an then running even 60s. Don't think going for consistent 29s 200m splits is doable or ideal.
Going out in 28 and then running even 60s is positive splitting, not negative splitting.

Is this a joke question?
Why do you care if your splits are even? If it matters to you which it shouldn't take your goal time and divide it by the number of splits you want to measure. Ta da...you have your even splits to achieve your goal.
Running even splits has no bearing on your final time it just means you have an excellent ability to run the same pace.
It isn't rocket science people!!
The OP did a steady fade with 28, 30, 32, 35 and picked it up a bit with 33.
Hitting 1:30 at 600 that way made the 4th 200 hard.
I think hitting 600 at 1:32 by going 30, 31, 31 could have set him up for a 63 finish instead of 68, which would produce 2:35.
And more base and strength work would produce an even faster finish off of a 1:32 opening.
It's not just setting a goal time and dicing by five 200m splits.
