Seriously I'm sick of the newbie terms like "tempos."
To me it's a garbage term that basically means "I went running today."
If you say fast distance then I know that you ran something close to race pace.
I've heard a progressive run like mile in 6:00, mile in 5:45, mile in 5:30, and mile in 5:00 called a tempo run.
I totally agree, the term tempo run makes little sense to 95% of high school and college runners and 100% of recreational runners. Even comments here show that people do not understand the term. (Ie. "anywhere from 8km to marathon pace") that is so vague it's ridiculous!
I explain to my athletes to run in terms of percentage of race pace for that distance. They understand race pace is 100% of the speed they run in a race so 75% of race pace is understandable. Besides at the end of the day it does not make a difference if they run tempos too fast or too slow the goal is to improve aerobic capacity.
Runners over analyze the training far too much.
