Ok so I'm interested in a discussion about how you can gauge potential based on parent's times. I'll start:
My mom was the more serious runner: team won states in XC, 18:00/5:10/2:19 as a senior in high school in 1983. Unfortunately she went to a small school (NAIA), qualified for nationals xc as an individual her first 2 years, ran about 4:45 for 1500 and then got so sick (mono and tonsillitis for months) that she gave up running for a few years.
My dad was pretty unserious in his training (didn't run HS or college), but did run a couple marathons in about 3:00:00 in his late 30s.
I don't know much about times, but my grandfather did earn himself a scholarship of some kind to a (now d1) good school.
Neither of my parents ran very high mileage.
Any guesses?
I want to hear about other people's parents and their own running (personal experience and really elite runners).
