As a runner, what would be some of the most annoying/weird things your coaches would do.
Mine would be making workouts too complicated. "Today you're going to run 4x3x380'a at around mile pace effort, cutting down each rep by half a second, with all reps beginning at 2:45." Uhhhh coach my brain hurts from thinking about this workouts.

Being fickle about money and at times political.
Keep your warmups on, I don't care if it's 100 degrees out!
My coach in college was a classic bulletin board coach. He once wrote 10x "turn abouts" for 1500m; 8x for 800m runners.

Criticize everyone and everything and make fun of people and consider it "coaching," this at a high school level where you're trying to keep kids from quitting. I was an assistant. He was also an assistant football coach of lineman, and he'd blow his whistle and say "take a knee everybody," and point at people and criticize them. He was a long time social studies teacher and friends with AD so .....

Most people use the words incorrectly to make themselves sound smart, in order to justify their coaching pedigree.
I prefer people who can speak words that their athletes, parents and ADs will understand and respond to appropriately.
Cargo shorts, matching sweat suits
Yelling at me to get back up when I collapse on the track after a monster performance.
Also, telling me to pick up the pace during the first lap of a mile race. And to "get out fast" in a 3k.

Yes! Along with wearing running clothes to running speaking engagements where no running occurs.
not reading books about running.
Not having any progression to the workouts during the season
not explaining the purpose of workouts
not ever individualizing training
not progressing the workouts from year to year for developing runners
encouraging runners to race the workouts, go out hard and hang on as long as possible
having something called "off season" that lasts for 2-3 months and involves about 30% of the volume of XC season
And once again: not reading any books about running.

Wouldn't it be "work the legs" in running coach?
Not being flexible about paces and rest intervals when runners can't hit splits in a given workout.
On my first workout after XC season, I was doing a hill workout and wasn't hitting the splits without going to the well on almost every rep. My coach's way of handling this wasn't to increase rest, reduce the volume, even make the paces slower, no, his solution was to scream in my face and tell me what a shit workout I had. Needless to say I don't work with him much anymore.
My coach does not groom himself very often. Started not getting haircuts or shaving about a year ago. Now has started wearing a baseball hat all the time, but wears it backwards like he's a teenager. Hard to take serious when we're at a race and coach looks so shabby.
May sound silly but it is a habit coach does now.
My coach had really bad acne. Once, after a run we were standing around talking and he was casually popping giant zits on his chest. I got splattered by some zit juice. It was traumatic
First time I got drunk was with that guy. Sophomore year of HS. He calls the office pretending to be my dad, gets me out of school. Has someone else call pretending to be the mom of my friend and teammate, we went to the beach and got drunk. A 6 pack of MGD per person. Later, we went to the section championship track meet. My friend couldn't even get out of the car he was so sick.
Coach has a habit of scratching his balls during team talks and adjusting his junk.

After you sobered up, did you notice any pain in the area of your a$$hole?
