Hi, I have a question regardin marathon training and its effect on your vo2max needed to run a good 5k. Recently, I ran a 315 marathon in which I felt too fresh at the finish line, which I probably feel I could have gone a couple of minutes faster(this was my second one)anyways that doesnt matter.
What matters is a recent 5k time of mine in last week which was an 1800 flat. Now last year in July I had run a 1642 5k and had never trained for a marathon but trained specifically on hills until I got injured that same month. Since I started back up again in September, I did purely base workouts (65-70 mile weeks with 1 -2 tempos a week and one long run of 18 miles-20 miles) to prepare for the march Marathon. No speed, no hills, no 5k races for a year.
Should I be disappointed with my 5k time? Because it really sucks and i hated to see little kids around the age of 12 beat me. My splits were perfectly even throughout the race and I felt I was goin HELLA FAST...to find out I ran really slow.
Does marathon training slow you down that much or do I just suck? Please be honest. If I suck, is it because of the lack of speed workouts the whole last year? Thanks.
