I was scrolling through facebook and I saw a guy who won a 5k a bit under 16 minutes and has a marathon PR in the mid 2:30s. I clicked on his profile and his bio leads with "Professional distance runner". For some reason that caught my eye. While I agree he is a talented and above average runner it is a far cry from a professional contract. He can definitely win some races on the local level and get some cash but he would definitely struggle to place well in any large marathon.
So at what point can you call yourself "professional"?
I don't want to define it by having a shoe contract with a salary because I have seen people without shoe contracts that make a living on their race earnings or people placing well nationally/internationally with no contract.
At the same time winning $500 a couple times a year isn't really earning a professional wage.
P.S - I'm did not mention specific times/races/names as I do not want LetsRun to troll/bully the poor guy who was just minding his own business.
