4:30 if you hope to be good eventually.

5 min. Is the correct answer.
Below 5:30 is good. 5 as a freshman is probably top 20% depending on how competitive your district is. In Texas, there are usually about two dozen middle school boys who run 5:0X or faster for 1600 each year. Most jr high kids are running @ 5:30 for a mile. So, if you are under 5:30 as a freshman, you are doing well and have potential. Boys tend to grow a lot in HS compared to MS. So, freshman boys have a long way to develop compared to upperclassmen. Jim Ryun got cut from his track team as a freshman when he could only run 5:39 for the mile.
SUB 5

Figuring out a goal time should be set once you figure out where you are fitness-wise. If you want to know what good freshman times are around your area, just search your HS up on Athletic.net and look at the freshman times in your state/region/district.

Apparently not.
Pics?
4:40 qualifies you for the NBIN freshmen mile.
That's a tangible number to shoot for, as opposed to a Let's Run poster opinion.
Not that there's anything wrong with those...
I didnt break 5:30 my freshman year and ran 9:56 for 3200 my senior year.
Freshman times don't matter.
my teammate ran 9:44 3200m when he was a h.s. freshman. also ran a 4:33 milewhere you place and times are actually the only things that matter in trackto answer originally question, i'd say sub 5. i ran 4:52 as a frosh and 4:24 as a senior. was more of a 400m/800m guy though

I "only" ran 5:09 as a freshman but eventually ran 4:17 as a senior. And knew people who ran 4:30 as a freshman and 4:20-4:25 as seniors. Everyone's different.
