I was a 400 guy back in high school and we had a cinder track. My 400 times were always about a second slower at home than when running on an all weather track at an away meet.
We practiced on cinders in high school. Occassionally we'd go up to the University and practice on the tartan track. On cinders I would average 2:30 during a typical 8 x 800 workout... 2:25 on tartan. While it was faster I'd rather practice on cinders... much easier on the joints.
