I think some Americans have a jaundiced idea of what 'liberal' means!
I would consider myself to be liberal with a small l, but it is synonymous with tolerance, democracy and fairness.
I have no problem with Steve Martin's tweet, and I'm often telling women I know that they look great or sexy and think nothing of it. And I don't know anyone amongst my circle of friends that would find anything offensive about what he said.
It's outrageous that anyone put pressure on him to delete his tweet.
It's equally silly to blame it on liberals. That's like saying, if any terrorist that commits a crime in the name of religion, we should blame all religion.
There will always be people who are looking to find something to criticise or be offended by. That is an unfortunate fact of life. It doesn't mean they are religiously or politically the same! That's ridiculous.
I don't pretend to know as much about American society as the Americans that post on here. All I can say is that as an outsider, I am in the vast majority of people who have been holding their heads and wondering what on earth the Americans were thinking of in voting Trump!
Perhaps many voted as a protest at what they perceive is liberalism, but I can assure you that this perception is nothing to do with what liberalism actually stands for as far as I see it.
Yes, there is an issue with so called, "political correctness', going too far, but that is not the same as being liberal.
