So you can see this guy's strava profile here and the times he's claimed:

Last year when I was working at the local running store in Fredericksburg, VA this guy came in looking for a training partner and proceeded to tell one of the fastest people in town he had run under 14 for 5k and 28:10 for 10k. Now as far as we knew the only person in town even remotely capable of that was Tim Young and we suggested he could get in touch with Tim, or he could run with the guy who he was talking to in the store.
According to someone who has worked for a long time in the Fredericksburg running community said he'd seen the guy at some local races and he had run in the 17-18 minute 5k range.
In the last year this dude has been snatching up CRs on strava, but picking some that are fairly attainable and it seems like he's targeting specific ones because they're be the only place on his run where he goes that fast. He's also posted a couple of silly workouts on the track, but they're not recorded by GPS.
What I want to know is, can there possibly be any way this guy isn't making all of this up and is slamming runs to try and build some street cred? Could he actually be a legit runner?
IS THIS BOGUS? Dude says he's run 4:02, 13:43, 28:10.

It shows him as a Cat 5 cyclist and a 13:41 runner. And a dualathlete. I think Cat 5 is the highest rating for a cyclist so he should be pretty much unbeatable on the duathlon circuit.
-
Definite BS and he probably bikes to get the CRs too
-
Search up his full name, maybe? Those are super human pr's, and it would be cool to know some random cyclist in your town has ran that fast. Why would he lie?
-
You have to give him credit - his 5K and 10K times line up.

Cat 5 is the lowest rating for a cyclist. It means that he has started in less than 10 licensed races, or that he chose not to upgrade to Cat 4 after the 10 race minimum because he would rather race with beginners.
Cat 1 is the highest rating and means that at one point you were finishing front of the pack at Cat 2. Cat 2 means you were finishing at the front of the pack at Cat 3, and so on.
Cat 1 and Cat 2 often race with the Pro category so to upgrade to Cat 1 often requires beating or racing close to the Pro level. Cat 2 ranges from pretty competitive to someone who will soon sign with a pro team. -
Cat 5 is the lowest level. Entry level. Cat 1 is the highest before you turn pro.

His instagram used to say he is an "olympic hopeful," sure...

Thanks for the clarification. I knew Cat 5 was at the extreme - but unfortunately I said higher extreme when, alas, it is at the lower extreme. -
Not sure about why he would, but I fairly certain he is. He went to a local high school an went to Radford University, but there's nothing I can find of him being on the team at Radford and any place with results of that caliber with those initials to go with the last name. If you were that good wouldn't you make it to nationals in XC, and why not go to a college that actually has men's track?

Haha. At least he doesn't hide under a mat and jump into the race on the last lap -
At least he has a verified 8'0" PV
-
The dude might not be lying... But his times are also incorrect.
To clarify, his running PRs are probably duathlon run section splits. And duathlons are notorious for having short distances. Especially small ones that nobody cares about. It's totally possible he did a duathlon with a 1 mile run and ran 4:02, but it may have actually been less than 1400 meters. Same for the 5k and 10k.
Maybe I'm giving him too much credit and he's really a bold faced liar. -

He's obviously lying. Don't even try to rationalize it. -
I have a friend who ran for OTC in the 70s, did something like 13:35/28:35 and was really good. Obviously. He put in for a middle school coaching position a few years back and wrote his PRs but was turned down because they thought he was lying.
