I really do want to run xc and track at the D1 level. And I have the times. But for the last two years I have smoked cigarettes daily. I don't smoke a lot - usually a pack last me 4 weekdays and then a Friday-Sunday. So 2 packs a week. I have not noticed any detrimental affect from the smoking as my times have improved every year.
I was just wondering if there were any D1 runners who also smoke. Will it just not be possible at that level?
That amount of smoking is actually performance enhancing.

It's similar to diet.
You can eat oreo cookies, and Pepsi for breakfast and run well that day, but as a lifestyle it's harmful and will hurt you long term.
I know of all-conference runners who took up pot smoking that had to drop out of cross country within a year. Bill Rodgers smoked for a few years then came back and won 4 Bostons and 4 New Yorks.
Anything to excess is going to hurt you, especially if it involves something you'll need to use...like your lungs!
I knew a runner with HS times good enough to walk onto most D1 schools but he chose to go to a D2 school. It was a good nationally ranked program but his bad habits caught up to him and he regressed every year.

Pretty simple: you're being an idiot. You're in high school, so this is pretty par for the course. There are other dumb things you could be doing to undermine your running, like staying up all night or eating a horrible diet; why not try those instead?
Carbon monoxide. Look it up.
Keep smoking the cigs.. Pro runners used to cool down with them back in the day, and cigs also resemble altitude training.
Have you not seen the pictures of Bradley Wiggins smoking (possibly weed) for his "asthma"? Smoking is actually a "marginal gain". Knock yourself out.
