I do not even own a pair of tights/pants. It was 28 here this morning and it will be 16 in the morning and then down to 12 on Friday. Do I risk any sort of injury on my morning runs in shorts or is just a comfort thing? Its just 8-10 base miles a morning no speed work
I've strained a hamstring before while doing a LR in the cold with shorts. With easy running the big muscles stay pretty cold and working them for 2+ hours brings some risk. That day I bought a pair of compression shorts, the knee length kind, for easy running in temps that you mentioned. Much colder and I go full length tights.

Come on dude. Your legs warm up in a few minutes. I have never worn tights or sweat pants EVER. Man up and wear shorts. Your legs will be fine after a few minutes.

Legs should be fine but as you pointed out, you must protect other things!
I don't see how wearing shorts could cause injury risk. The lack of pants/tights causes the risk, not the presence of shorts.
I always wear running shorts under my running pants. By your logic, this should create injury risk since I am wearing shorts.

Just do a proper warm-up indoors before heading outside and you'll be fine. The last thing you want to do is start a run in freezing temps with cold muscles.
Or go out into subfreezing temperatures already sweaty.
I ran in 30 degrees this morning. A little frosty but felt good to me.

Yo knees boys, yo knees. If it gets below 30 F windchill, there might just be a reason for sweatpants. You can get away with lots of crazy stuff when you are young, but your circulation is not as good when you get older.

They tend to have GREAT wind pants and jackets for just a few bucks.

Get a pair of new balance impact tights they're amazing to run in, it's made winter running more enjoyable this year for me. I do believe shorts in the cold is an injury risk.
Freeze your tip once or twice and you won't do it again. I had dick freeze plus chafing in the urethral opening back in my days of wearing shorts in freezing weather. Never again. Tights plus compression shorts keeps everything close together in a nice toasty package.

you either live somewhere warm or i'm calling BS here.
two years ago it was so cold i had to wear tights under track pants. f*ck it was cold though.
tights are necessary in the winter in some environments.
there is no man up.
you can't run tomorrow with frost bite.
