And if it is technically not the "school" team, could a team that qualified bring along, say, a girl who played soccer all season but who was also an awesome athlete to run as the #5 runner?

Yep, they can race at the regional, so I assume the same would go for nationals. I know a soccer player who randomly ran NXR (didn't qualify, but ran darn fast) for his school, so I think it should be fine. As long as they're academically on good standing with their school
As for the club name, some people like running under something else. Also, being XC people, sometimes HS kids don't want to represent their school who only cares that their football team almost won sectionals, not that their XC team made it to nationals. Just saying.
Has to do with most schools / state policies on out of state competitions and prize acceptance that they have to run as a club instead of as the team (also to reduce liability to the school).
For NXN the main requirement is that all competitors on a club team must be from the same high school (why people can't band together and create super/ region based teams). So if the soccer player was from the same high school as the club and ran at the regionals I believe they would be allowed to compete. (Iffy here there might a rule about them having to have competed with the school team but i haven't read it if it does exist).

That makes sense as far as states banning out of state competitions (I guess . . .) but accepting prizes? I could see it if the kids were getting $$, as that could affect their amateur status, but what "prizes" are they getting? Nike swag? And don't some xc schools go to other states during the Fall to race in regional competitions? So what State rule are we specifically talking about?
NXN and FL is not a recognized NFHS event. In our region of CIF these meets are outside of the season of play. Athletes are not allowed to represent their school outside of the season or non CIF/NFHS event.

This is exactly the reason, and yes, the amount of gear Nike provides these athletes could run afoul of some state association rules, too. NFHS has a strong grip on how schools send athletes to national competitions (but they also invented the rules for basketball, so massive props out to them there!).

Timpanogos and Lone Peak from Utah used their school names last year and there is no town in Utah with either of those names. Maybe this is a new rule? Good insight tho

I can't recall the exact wording, but they may allow landmarks or areas in addition to cities. Some clubs use school mascot in their club name at regionals but if they make it to nxn Nike changes the club name, usually to a town or area name.

They choose club names. The name CAN be just the name of your school (we did that) but some opt for a different name. That's something I never quite understood. Why not just be your school name. Kinetic can just be Saratoga if not Saratoga Springs.

No they don't prohibit it. My team used our school name. Auburn, going to nationals this year from NY goes to Auburn High School.
Many schools are simply the name of the town(s) that the school is located in.
It's NOT an official high school event. The coach can't use school time to take time off to travel with the team- they have to use personal time if they're a school employee.
Some states are more strict- I think Illinois at least used to prevent the coach from even going to nationals or any non-sanctioned event. But in NY coaches take kids to road races in the preseason (they just can't wear school uniforms or use school vehicles and drivers to transport them unless they have proof that they paid themselves.

The rule for NXN has been that club names need to be geography based, so typically the city/town the school is located in. If it matches the school name in that instance, it is fine. I work at Wayzata HS. It is located in the city of Plymouth, MN, but is part of the Wayzata school district, which encompasses multiple cities in the area, including the city of Wayzata. Since it is a geographical name, it's allowed. You can go here and see all of the historical club names in NXN's history:

In the pre-regional qualifying days (2004-2006), club names were left to whatever that team wanted. When regional qualifying began, it was changed to minimize confusion. One name in particular that was carried over is Kinetic XC (Saratoga Springs, NY), as an example.
