Going to a Military Academy and playing a sport acceptance

The running will help your resume but will not get you in on that alone. Are you a captain XC or track team or do expect to be? The academies are looking for leaders and being selected as a team captain shows leadership.

You also need to get on their radar NOW! Contact the coach, schedule a visit, attend local academy admission seminars, etc.

Good recommendation/references/connections are more valuable for your admission than how fast you can move your legs.

We're looking for one of kids too. The timeline provided on their site starts everything now (December of Junior year).

First items on the list:

take and submit ACT/SAT

contact regional field force rep

complete candidate questionnaire

apply for summer leaders experience

prepare for fitness assessment

Not true. You should reach out to their coach and keep him updated on the times you run this year. Being a recruited athlete helps A LOT with admissions. But keep in mind that you still need to go through the same process of all the other candidates. You'll still have to take the Candidate Fitness Assessment, be medically qualified, and obtain a nomination. Regardless, you should work on making yourself a competitive candidate in case the coach doesn't want to use a recruiting spot on you. That means good standardized test scores (shoot for at least 1500/1600 on the SAT or 32 on the ACT), good grades (many candidates have a 4.0 or higher), and good leadership credentials (team captain, club president, etc). I am a high school senior girl and I was recruited to run XC & Track for West Point. I ultimately chose to run for the Air Force Academy. Anyway, West Point and other service academies are not looking for students that only awesome athletes or only braniacs. They want a well rounded person that is able to have very strong academics, athletes and most importantly, deep desire for military service and leadership. The main reason that you want to attend a military academy needs to be because you want to serve in the military, not because you are able to run D1 athletics. I wish you best of luck in college search, and I strongly support applying to a military academy. Definitely contact the coach and tour the academy!

I do have to admit though, I'm a 800 runner, so I'm focusing on track and not XC. But I'm going to try out XC. Mainly just wanted to go to a service academy.
