Even though she got 4th at NXR, she can't run Nike Nationals because Utah doesn't allow middle schoolers to compete with high schoolers like MN did. Rules are rules, but what a bummer for her.

Finaly some sanity from Nike. It's a high school event. There arent any other sports where you will see an 8th grader prticipating. Good for Nike. They clearly realized that they were opening the door to all kinds of problems. If she was allowed to run, then any kid in MS or ES could also.
ITs a shame she cant run.....She needs to get her best races in before she gets hips and slows down like 99% of 7th-9th grade phenoms.

+1
Good for Nike. I was surprised she was even allowed to run in the championship race at NXR.
Lets keep college championships for college men and women only. High school championships for high school boys and girls only. If anyone wants to start a middle school championship, I'm all for that, but get them out of the high school races and keep an even playing field for all of the teams entered so we are all playing by the same rules.
I'm also glad the girl she displaced at NXR Southwest gets to go. Would suck to be a the first high school girl out for a high school championship because a fast middle schooler took your spot. Probably the same feeling teams have when other teams get to qualify and race middle schoolers against them...
I'm rooting for Grace Ping to be an amazing high school athlete over the next 4 years. :)

Sure would be nice if states like Minnesota, New York, New Mexico, and whatever other ones there are out there came to that conclusion as well for their own state championship meets.
I understand wanting to include middle schoolers for tiny schools that cannot otherwise fill out a team. But those are extreme circumstances. Otherwise, let middle schoolers compete at the middle school level and stop pushing for such young kids to train at a higher level so early on - it would be better for their development, both mentally and physically.
She should go run the course by herself the morning of the meet and then throw her watch over the finish blow-up arch when she sees her time will be faster than all the other girl high schoolers.
Is Ping a Chinese surname?

It's a stupid rule, made by a backward organization.
They should make an exception, and let her compete.

You do realize that she was able to run it last year when she was a Minnesota runner, correct?
There is your stupid rule...
There was an 8th grade girl on my schools volleyball team that went to state and they let her play. It's not just running.

They have a USATF middle school cross country championship. Last Dec, it was held in Albuquerque. Grace finished 2nd to Aidyn Woodall of CO. Of course, Aidyn was acclimated to elevation but a great runner nonetheless.

... and set a time faster than the Nike approved runners.
It's not a Nike rule, it is a Utah rule.
The race is not in Utah.

They're trying to protect Utes. Or is it utes? Or youths?
Nike Southwest meet director Jeff Guy explained, "Ultimately Nike will make the final decision about Grace Ping since this is their event."

It used to be Pingstein.
Does anyone know what school she'll be running for next year? My bet is AF o will try and "recruit" her.
She should skip High School and go right to Boise State, though I know Ihmels is a little leary she might still grow and crack the 85-lb optimum he shoots for.
