I live in the DMV area and everywhere I go it's German car after German car. Are there really that many wealthy people here who can afford these things?
Who in the world can responsibly afford a 40-60k car that has sky high repair costs unless they are making like 200k or more?
I'm a single guy making a little over 100 and I drive a japanese car. I don't get the appeal of German at all. You aren't a special snowflake for owning one.

They don't have to cost that much, are a prestige make & are probably largely company cars.

Funny, when I read the subject I was thinking that there's no way you see more than I do since I am in the dc area. Yeah, where I live it's those kind of cars everywhere splashed with land rovers.

I thought the same when I moved to the Sea-Tac area. When I first moved there, I assumed everyone around me was making a crazy income. Then I saw some co-workers who were likely making a similar salary to me were driving them. One co-worker had hers (BMW) because her wealthy dad handed it down to her & bought a new Audi. I also think it's a peer pressure sort of thing where everybody else is driving a luxury car so those who can't afford one buy one.
The really wealthy actually drive Ford, honda & toyota cars.

So I find used cars with 30 k miles or so and keep them for 10 years or 200,000 miles whichever comes first. BMW 325 now has 144,000 miles and no major issues. Last car was Passat, it had 205,000 miles when I sold it, no major issues, all normal wear items. Anyway, who cares what people drive as long as they like it?
Had a friend who made about 77K in the area who leased a BMW. I make a little over 100K too but live near a Metro line and don't have a car. Just a lot of people frontin'.

Germany is a world leader in manufacturing and exports. I couldn't find anything online to back your claim up, can you provide an article or source?
A good friend of mine is a German car mechanic and also from Germany. He is the owner of a very prosperous auto shop in the Bay Area (maaaaany German cars).
He has had his hands in German engines for over 30 years - the parts are now made in China. As for your inability of finding the proof online try harder.
German cars have parts designed and/or manufactured in Germany, USA, Japan, China, everywhere... so do American cars, Japanese cars...
