I have a kid that I think has some potential...
What is good? 8'? 10'? 12'?
Thanks :-)

At the NFL combine last year - UConn's Byron Jones jumped 12 feet 3 inches - an all-time best for the combine and bettered the 46-year-old world mark. The standing long jump hasn't been an Olympic even since 1912 - when Jim Thorpe competed. The records are spotty. To show you how good that is, the high school record holder in the LJ, Marquis Goodwin, only jumped 11 feet at the 2013 combine. I would say that anything over 10 feet is very, very good.
This is from a weightlifting site (the World's strongest model thinks anything over 8 is "pretty darn good":
I only know HS girls' marks, but many guys' marks are roughly 20-25% better.
8ft is very good for a HS girl. I've only had a couple that could do it. One was a 5'6" hjer.
We've had some 12'+ vaulters hit close to 8 (7'9-7'10ish).
Really good sprinters can get that far if they give a crap (but they usually aren't as keen on getting their legs back under them.)
Also...this is a skill that can be taught.
I would go ahead and say 9'6"-10ft is very good for a HS guy.
Brian Mac says over 8 feet is good for a high school boy.
My best standing long jump in high school was 8'11" - I jumped 23-7.
in 2014 I coached a high schooler who had an SLJ best of 10'4". He went over 24 in the long and over 50 in the triple.
