Does anyone know who the slowest male HS runner was to eventually make D1 XC All American?
Best example I could find was Joel Reichow who finished 36th at Nats last year, but only ran 1:58/4:17/9:44 in HS.
I'm sure there are better examples out there...

His teammate, Thomas Curtin ran a 9:09 in HS, but improved immensely. Heck, he was the only one beat the King last year!

*Germano did make the NYS Meet in XC in 2012, as well as NXN as an individual. However, he still has shown massive improvements.

He went to high school in MN. 4:17 in California training conditions would be 4:07 + 9:00, probably.
MN high school runners are worth much more than the times they run compared to most of the rest of the nation. Snow doesn't melt until mid-April, state meet isn't much later and there is no indoor.
So kids have about 3 weeks to go from running on snow and in hallways to racing on the track before championship meets.
More than that the weather is a filter. If you have what it takes to train in those conditions you've got more motivation than 90% of those california kids running similar times and it's that drive that will set people apart when it comes to performing in college and beyond.

Dani Stack at ISU was slower than Crystal Nelson. She was 2:18/5:06/11:10. She was All-American in XC and 4th in the 10k at NCAAs.
Who was the male who was a 4:52 miler who ran Olympic Trials in the marathon?
I think you might be referring to Matt Elliott, who ran 4:40-4:50 in HS, had an undistinguished college career, exploded as a post-collegian, and placed fourth at the 2013 US champs.
He went on to run 3:36 later that summer, I believe.
Girls wise Abbey D'Agostino fastest mile was 5:01 in HS.
To whoever suggested a girl that went 4:55/10:36, I bet there are tons of girls out there that were AA and slower than that. I would say 40% of most D1 rosters are slower than that. So every time someone breaks out and goes from being an expected 4-7 runner and is a stud they would probably fit into this category.
