Starts on the SF Bay side of SF, goes up the big Hayes St. Hill...ends up on the beach on the Pacific side of town. All I can remember from watching on TV as a kid...never ran it.
I did, it lays out the course, but no description of hills and goings on.
The course is not that bad. The Hayes street hill takes 2-4 mins to run up. I was connected to a 13 man centipede at the time, but it was fine. Our guys had worried about the hill a bit, but it was pretty easy. Last 3-4 miles are all flat or downhill. We ended up running sub 5 with 13 guys for the last 3 to 4 miles to win last year in 39:47 for 12k. Not that fast, the opening 2 5:45's slowed us down. Overall, it is a very fast course if you run it right. There is a huge downhill on the other side of Hayes hill were you can make up time in you don't blow out your quads. Good luck...
If you want to run fast, get seeded or sub-seeded. The seeded standard isn't that tough, and the sub-seeded is pretty easy. That way you get to start at the front and won't have to worry about the mass of humanity.
Unless you have a seeded number forget about running this as a race. Even if you manage to push your way close to the front of the 50,000 people behind the tape another 30,000 will jump infront of you in the first two miles.
Get a seeded number and go out hard or you'll end up behind a bunch of Elvis impersonators pushing a keg in a shopping cart.
The first mile and a half are slightly uphill, then you hit the Hayes Street Hill which is very steep and 4 blocks long. On the other side its a steep downhill to the Golden Gate Park panhandle. Its then 4.5 miles gently downhill to the ocean where you finish alongside the beach. If its foggy you'll be happy.
My advice: don't race it. Get some friends together, get a funny cosntume and bring a backpack full of alcohol and walk it with the several thousand others who are dressed up and tanked. You will have a blast. You will not believe what drinking continuously while walking for more than 7 miles in the sun will do to you.

Wow do you have a life? Sounds healthy.
Yes, I am actually a serious runner. But nothing wrong with having fun once in a while.

I know who you are, but what you describe doesn't sound like fun, guess I grew out of it.
you dont need to get a seeded number anymore. all you have to do is sign up with a group of something like 15 or more runners and they will put you up front, behind the actual seeded runners. same thing with charity runners--they give you preferential placement.

Anyone know if the Microsoft/mostly-Aggies pede will be back to challenge the Autodesk/Transports pede?
Clusterf**k.
how does one go about getting a seeded number?
running whatever the qualifying times are at a different race.
i think the sub seeded division requires like a 42 min 12K? mail in proof with your application.
