So normally wealth or lack thereof isn't an issue during XC practice. But it has come up lately.
I go to a large public suburban high school, and consider myself middle class.
We had a team fundraiser where parents basically wrote a check to the team. We somehow raised a huge amount of money (neighborhood of $5k). I was shocked that my team has that much extra cash laying around.
Also, all our races are on dirt/grass except for one coming up on Saturday that's mostly on pavement. The coach said everyone was required to race it in flats (we have never been required to have flats before). So this week, everyone has bought $40-50 flats at the drop of a hat with less than 1 weeks notice, just for one random dual meet. I of course will run the meet in my regular trainers because I can't justify buying new shoes for one race.
Essentially, why are my teammates so rich? I can't see why XC would attract rich kids.
