Last year one of my age-group-oponents ran 9:45 for 3000m as 15-yo. He also ran 1:54 for 800m this year but I only expected him to run 33:xx or 34low this year, because he is a mid-distance runner.
I made second place behind him in a 10-k-race in April this year. He ran 34:40. His run was all-out, because he was lying on the ground after the finish-line.
But now my chances are gone, because he ran a 31:40 for 10k at the Asics Grand 10.
How is that possible?
Those are quality times for a youngster.
To answer your question, he had already run 1:54 for 800m. That's a time that places in most state meets, heck, it will place you in most conference meets at the D2 college level...
If he really is more of a long distance guy who happens to own some speed then the 800m time indicated that he was just a good base period or two away from running a breakthrough at a longer distance.
I hope someone finds out who this kid is so we can follow the progression. Many on the boards would have given anything to have that kind of talent at that age.
