What minimum miles per week would you need to run to go sub 3 hours?

130 is fine

Never run a marathon but I'm thinking I could do it off a year of 45 or 50 tops.
Yeah I'm going to train my friend and he's shooting for 3 hours and I was thinking around 50 would do it.
Not done one myself yet, but sub 3 will be my goal. I've heard mid 40s to mid 50s is quite common for 3 hour marathoners. But some faster people can do it on less, and others need to hit 60s and 70s in some of the bigger weeks. So it might depend a bit on your buddy's 5/10k/HM times.

As someone else said your friend's experience, PRs, and training pace matter.
I average 6:45 and below for non-workout mileage which is pretty comfortable. With some focus I see it panning out nicely when I'm older and move up to the 'thon.
50 mpw will be sufficient for many young males.

I found that, after the base, I needed 1000 miles of training which could be 20 weeks of 50 mpw or sometimes, 60+ mpw x 13-15 weeks.
I used to train with a guy who didn't clear 40 mpw at the most who ran in the 2:30's. He ran his long run with me and a couple of other 8-12 milers and that was it.
100 km
30 miles a week
3 workouts a week
Minimum number of miles at what pace? Someone that can run a 16 minute 5k will need fewer miles to break 3 hours than someone that runs a 19 minute 5k
I had not run in 2 years and I broke 3 easily for the marathon a month ago on a whim. My 10k pr was 28 high 3 years ago then I quit running shortly after to focus on getting money. I played basketball and baseball in between to stay in shape.
You realize your sub 3 with 28 minute 10k talent is pretty lame, right? That's 40 to 50 minutes slower than you should be able to run. I get that you weren't training. But it's not that dissimilar from the hobby joggers hitting 4+ hour marathons. Go get the Olympic trials standard already.

Course he realises that - pressing home the point that this is a daft question, obviously depends on talent.
Did it off 40.

+1
But you need to take a few risks and put in quite specific workouts. Not that there's anything wrong with that. 40 miles on 3-4 workouts with some good talent, and you should be quite confident and maybe even go a bit below 3h.

^ you realize your entire post is lame, right?
26.2...and you only have to do that once.

This is the absolute gayest post on here in a while and that's saying something. He can do whatever he wants. I know it hurts your vagina that he's faster than you but he's not fast enough to be a pro and he's doing what he wants to do. "Get the Olympic trials standard already"? For what? Give me a break. With the exception of maybe two or three people in the US (and that's being generous) those with the standard aren't good enough to do jack shit at the Og anyway. Go home puss boy.
