Does it really matter? It's not like there is real fruit juice or anything in there?

Eventually the sugar in it may start to ferment and then you'll have a nasty tasting alcholic gatorade.
I never refrigerate it, and I haven't had a problem. But once I open it, I do tend to have finished it within a few days. I just prefer that stuff to be at room temperature.
For real?
I mean, I wouldn't drink it like weeks later but the next morning doesn't hurt. They say the same thing for Coke but I'm always drinking warm, flat Coke

What are you talking about? This has to be the dumbest thing i have read today. Has this ACTUALLY happened to you?
I have gotten mold in my unfridgerated gatorade before.
Lukewarm Gatorade is a perfect culture for growing bacteria. The same nutrients that nourish you also nourish those bacteria that left your mouth when you took a swig. If you drink the Gatorade after sufficient breeding time, you will give yourself a sore throat.
You should drink something less hospitable to bacteria that can be stored at room temperature. I recommend whiskey.
Out.
DUMB
i could be wrong on this, but i think the sugar has to be coming from a natural product to ferment. this happened to me when i didn't put apple juice in the fridge. i think gatorade just loses some flavor and perhaps its "texture" when it isn't refrigerated. i can't really think of any particularly compelling reason to put it there; there's nothing in it that could really go bad, unless you seriously backwash into it.
No problem with leaving it out. Just spit out the maggots that happen to get in your mouth unless you're a little anemic and need the extra nutrients.

The fermentation of gatorade was what I was trying to get at.
Not the mold. Although, I have never had mold grow in left out gaorade. Then again, I have never left it out longer then a couple of days. Maybe it's experiment time...
Anyway, I have had apple and orange juice both go bad and develop an alcohol flavor but I am almost a 100% sure gatorade can not ferment.
This week I tried a delightful Gatorade Orange '04, which I aquired from a tasting on Boyslston St last April.
First pour: tasted like orange Gatorade
8 hours later: slightly nutty; hint of tangerine, and a Saran Wrap finish
2 days later: playful aroma; light and moldy, but still sweet with a salty; an almost briny taste...like licking the prop of an Evinrude
6 days later: difficult to pour, chunky with a colorful collection of debris, some the size of croutons; just a slight waft of orange rind, nails and urinal cakes; electrolytes danced on my tongue, which was now coated with a thick gray paste
Score: 92
Its good for 3 or 4 days.
Cytomax seems to really go bad, basically after 24 hours. Nasty green mold, i won't make that mistake a third time.

Try refrigerate or unrefrigerated. You can't "fridgerate" something.
I've definitely had mildew growing in old gatorage bottles... never actually had any floaters or anything, but definitely have cleaned out track bags the week after and had a science experiment going on in there.
I think 2 days after opening it's fine even without refridgirating. I second the experience with cytomax- only 12 hours after mixing it with water during the summer. Very bad case of diarrhaea. I was so thirsty that I didn't recognize the bad rotten flavor, only after my last gulp.
Do you spit or swallow?
