I went from a 17:05 5k to 16:11 5k in 3 months after I stopped doing easy runs at 8 min mile pace and started doing them at 7min pace or even sub 7 on some runs, this was on top of 3 hard workouts a week.
Slow running makes slow runners.
youre still a JV runner, thats nothing to brag about. maybe if you are a freshman in high school it is something but if your older than that i wouldnt be bragging about those shitty times

Maybe this is how you dropped so much time so fast, but that is also how you get injured just as fast.

Yes make sure that you tell the East Africans who do easy runs starting at 9 min pace or slower to stop doing them

I did exactly what the OP said a few years back and did get faster and also got injured shortly after. This is not a good strategy,
For a moment there I thought you said sub 5 but then I realized it wasn't a typo and you meant 7. Guess what? You ARE running easy for your race time.

You do have a point about eliminating some junk miles. Slogging at 8min/mile pace does nothing useful.

Depends on the person's fitness. A 20min. 5ker's tempo pace is like 6:50, and a 16min. 5ker 5:30ish. I remember when I broke 20min. for 5k and my easy pace was still 9-10min miles. One day, it just went to 7:50-8:50miles. Easy is a feeling. Of course I get that 8min. pace if your a 16 5ker is laughably slow. Then again, wasn't George Malley or Bill Rodgers famous for doing/starting runs at 7min pace? It's all relative and depends on the individual.
I don't mean to brag, but I ran a 16:11 XC after 5 weeks of 30mpw at 7mins+
For someone who can run a 16:11 5k, 7 minute miles is an easy pace. Duhh

I'm guessing it's a click bait title. I think OP's point is that your easy pace should pick up as your fitness does. Makes sense. The 50mpw though, there are 6+hr 80yrold marathoners too.

Easy runs are a waste of time. They don't make you a better runner.

To improve, you must get out of your comfort zone; you must stretch your limits. That's the key.
