We caught up with Molly Huddle yesterday and talked to her about the loss of her American record in the 5000 and her NYC Marathon preparations.

"I would have loved to have fit in a fast 5k (after Rio) but when I committed to the marathon back in March or April, I looked at the Diamond League schedule and I looked at Brussels and said, 'I'll miss that race,' and it's upsetting (as) you always want to be in the Diamond League final in Brussels. It's a great meet and great track," said Huddle, who wasn't surprised that her record was broken by Rowbury. "But I committed to (the marathon) a while ago knowing that Shannon was in great shape and even Jenny (Simpson) was in great shape and that one day they would crack under 14:40 and it was this year. That's where the record belongs - we'll see how much lower it can go."

Of course you said it was a "loss." Always looking to stir up an emotional reaction between athletes.

Huddle is a class act. She's one of my favorite runners to follow right now, and I'm really curious to learn more about how her marathon training goes and follow her race in NYC.
Thanks for the short interview. -
I agree that Molly is a class act. What is the fastest debut time for a woman? I bet she could break it.. Hoping for the best for her come November!

You think she's going to go way under 2:20 in her debut? -
She is a class act, was right about Rowbury and Simpson, and must also be confident after running 30:13 that she can go in the low 14:30s, if not upper 14:20s.
-
I am not sure about that--I think running in the 14:30's or faster requires having near 4 flat speed or faster in the 1500 m---something that seems beyond Huddle's grasp (4:08 PR) but fairly routine for Rowbury or Simpson. This was only Rowbury's 2nd serious attempt at the 5000 m after a 14:48 so it is not hard to conceive her further improving in this event. Still Molly is a great runner in her own right and I could see ever getting the AR in the marathon eventually. Also, she is in her early 30s where you start to lose raw speed so the sub 14:40 ship has probably sailed regardless.

Shannon looked great breaking the 5k AR in Brussels. Strong finish with a 65 second last 400 indicates that she is definitely capable of a faster time.
Molly looked great breaking the 10k AR in Rio. Have to believe that her 10k performance could translate into a sub 14:40 5k.
Not sure how the marathon training will impact 5k performance for Molly, but there is a lot more money in marathons if she gets it right!
Shannon and Molly are the same age, BTW, so I don't think the sub 14:40 ship sailing comment is applicable to Molly. -
Shannon is a great TT but not a good championship runner. It looks like she peaked about a month late yet again.

Fastest *American debut. Left out a word. -

Given her marathon plans, the 5k may have passed for her. Look how poor Rupp looked at sub 10k distances this year. 30:13 is a 14:35-14:45 type time for an endurance based runner while I liked her chances of running sub 14:40, it isn't like that 10k time predicated a sub 14:30 or the like. -
The fastest U.S. debut is 2:25:53 by Kara for third, also at NYCM

30:11 is equivalent to 14:31 on Jack Daniels' calculator, so you would expect 30:13 to be equivalent to 14:32. So jjjj's guess of low 14:30's was pretty reasonable.
For a distance specialist like Molly, 1500m ability is not so relevant. -
Purdy says 30:13 is 14:25 for 5k and 2:21 for the marathon.
Daniels says 14:32 for 5K and 2:19:30 for the marathon. -
Screw her. She is a cheat. I will never forget what she did to win the New York Half Marathon. She should have been disqualified, and she should have received a one year ban from competing in the NY Half Marathon.

Agreed. A cheater.

Huh? She just finished 4th at the Olympic Games, narrowly missing a medal in an incredibly competitive field and running her last 800 in 1:59. I guess this makes her a poor championship runner? The only three athletes that beat her were Dibaba, Kipyegon and Simpson. Last I checked, those three are pretty good.
Secondly, she has stated that she felt like she was a bit sharp too early last season, so your assessment that she peaked late again is wrong on this front as well. -
Idiot. The athlete who lost to Huddle didn't complain, her agent didn't file a protest and none of the judges at the race thought it was an issue, but you somehow know better? STFU

You would expect a distance runner to score higher at the 10k than the 5k if they get into a good 10k (good pacing, decent weather, peak season. Not a lot of them happen. Ask yourself how many times a guy like Ritz ever ran a 10k in those conditions). If huddle could run 14:32, I would expect to see a barely sub 30 given her 1500 to HM ratio.
Obviously we are off in guessing land if she could run a 14:29 or a 14:39. Personally I would have more faith in Rowbury running sub 14:30 but I think she would have to dedicate a year to it. And I am not sure being say a 14:28 runner versus a 3:56 runner makes your odds of medalling better or worse. Seems like you are stuck in a pack of a couple of runners competing for that bronze medal either way. -
Didn't rupp close his second 5k of the 10k in like 13:15? Had to be even faster for the 5k than that, at the trials his speed was just lacking for a kick as was in rio, endurance for a fast pace was there though.
And 30:13 is near 13:30 for a 5k I believe.
