I've been following the 3-400 mile rule as a guide for when to change out my shoes. Am I wasting my money changing them out this often? I do 50-60 mpw so they only last 45-60 days typically. The cost is typically around 100 bucks a pair so this isn't cheap for someone who isn't wealthy.
Could I get away with changing them less frequently? I do most of my running on asphalt and concrete.
Real runners go Sans shoes. Just like our evolutionary ancestors. Do not succumb to the money pilfering scam of running shoe makers. Shoes cause every single runners injury including STDs.

Shoes are cheaper than MRIs. You can get $100 shoes much cheaper on closeout.
I think it depends on the shoe and how it wears. If the insoles are wearing evenly it's much less of a problem than if they are becoming lopsided. I'm pushing 1500mi on my current shoes which is probably a PR.
I recommend you own at least 3 pairs and rotate them. You should never run in the same shoes every day.

I agree with rotating at least 3 pairs. However, I also think the 300-400 miles "rule" is unnecessary and is espoused by those who stand to gain, directly or indirectly, from runners buying lots of shoes. I wear my shoes until they look significantly worn down in some part of the sole, which usually happens somewhere around 1000 miles.

I have not gotten that much mileage in. I tend to rotate my shoes, and I rotate them at different stages. So I don't go buy 3 pairs at once. That means some are fresher than others. And the pair that is dying is usually pretty different than the others. Mostly that is around 400 or so miles.
I'm always amazed at people who run 700+ miles on their shoes. But I think there are a lot of factors like height/weight/gait/terrain/etc.

It all depends on you and the trainers you have. I also run mostly in the 50 a week range and I get 600-800 miles on my trainers (Adidas Energy Boost 2) depending on the time of year (shoes burn out quicker during track season because of speed work on the track). I will sometimes count miles on the shoes but I go by feel on when to switch them mostly. When I start to feel like my knees or hips are getting a little achy or my legs a little tireder than they usually are on easy\recovery days I know my shoes are probably pretty close to done. You can always stretch the life of your shoes just as long as youre being carful not to overdo it and gt injured because of work out shoes. One way to get the most out of shoes is to buy 2 pairs of the same shoe at the same time and alternate between them day to day, this allows the midsoles to sort of "reinflate" during the day you are wearing the other ones and they will each last significantly more miles than they would ifnthey were your only pair.
I have 3 pairs, 2 pairs are really cheap like 10 bucks or a little more. And a pair of Adidas Adios adiboost 2 . I only use the Adidas for races... or if i want a PB...
So that i use cheap shoes to train.

yes, i switch up everything. vary brands, models, age. i even vary the type of shoe (cushion, responsive, light, heavy).
it's all in the pursuit of staying uninjured and it's working. it has nothing to do with extending the life of the shoes.
it's more variation than i'd likely use if i could vary the surface i run on, but my options are *very* limited (pavement or crete) here in suburbia.
after 500 miles i buy a new pair. usually end up around 520-550. I can usually tell i need a new pair, and i always feel so much better after switching. I've never rotated pairs, but ive been thinking about trying it out.

Same brand for me. But these shoes have helped me with a foot problem in a way that no other brand has.
My current three pairs are a super light minimal pair, an all around cushioned pair, and a medium cushioned trail shoe. So they all have a very different feel.

Learn the language before you worry about sneakers .

I've 2 of the same pairs of trails shoes; 1 for home and 1 for office. 1 pair of road shoes that I don't use much. Not sure what the mileage magic # is. I just kinda know when it's time to change them out.
When I was in my teens to early 20's.... 1000-1100 miles. College, closer to 800. Now I'm in the 600-800 range depending on the shoe. I rotate 2-4 pairs at all times not counting doing some workouts in flats.
