There's a half-marathon near me (like 30 miles away) that is tomorrow. I was just going to show up tomorrow and register. I went to their website tonight to check the race-day registration price again. As of just tonight, they closed registration, and for the dumbest reason: They were in jeopardy of running out of finishers' medals. This is stated on their website. So f-ing lame. Anybody else had that happen?
Why didn't you tell them that you didn't expect to finish, and drop out after 10 miles?

I had my sights on this race for a while, but a few months back picked up a hamstring injury, so I was happy at the time that I hadn't registered yet. Then, about the time that healed, I got a rib injury (unrelated to running). But that seemed to heal enough by about last week that I figured I'd give the race a shot. Having waited this long, I figured I'd just register on race-day. So that's why I waited.
Are you saying that I should show up anyway, tell them that I expect to drop out at 10 miles, but maybe finish instead?
They sold out. Deal with it.
They probably bought insurance for x runners, and got x number of finisher medals, or something like that. A little more complicated than that, but you wouldn't understand.
Next time don't pull your rib muscles from whacking off so much ahead of a race. Learned that lesson myself back in '92.
Half marathon isn't a real event anyway. It's just a made up event like race walking. Halfs are just a way for RDs to make money for people too __________ to train for a marathon.
Actually, yes. I called the RD, explained that I had been training (and didn't want a finishing medal), and he let me in.
It is amazing what can happen when you go to the source of a problem instead of whining on social media.
Personally, I think finishing medals are too hard to obtain.
In this day and age, probably starting medals are a better bet.
Actually, print up certificates calling someone a "Finalist" for competing, or at least paying the entry.
This certifies that L. R. C. Loser was a Half Marathon Finalist upon payment of $235 (plus late fees) to 'Only Exist on Paper' Half-Marathons Inc.
You could bandit the race.

I know several local races that allow runners to virtually enter the race. Where they can run the race by themselves whenever they get around to it and get their finisher medal mailed to them.

(1.) If the real reason that they sold out was limited insurance, why wouldn't they just state that? Why hide behind the excuse of lack of finishers' medals?

Considering that they didn't update the website until the evening before the race, and I didn't check the website until 9:30pm that night (only hours after it had been updated anyway), calling the race-director at that point was not possible.
Thanks for the idea, though, I'll keep this in mind for future races. It's amazing what you can learn when you communicate with people on "social media."
Not sure why you're being a d**k, though, considering you post at least a thread a day, seldomly about running.
