Will history repeat itself? In 1972 Frank Shorter finished 5th in the 10,000m before winning the marathon. Where will Galen Rupp finish in Rio after his 5th place in the 10,000m?

Yes. Galen Rupp will win Gold.
They might as well just give it to him right now.
No. Biwott wins.
Rupp 8th, if he even finishes.

Galen's chances of winning gold is virtually 0. His chances of medaling are approximately the same as Trump being the next POTUS (per Nate Silver this right around 10%).
They are saying it's going to much hotter this coming Sunday than it was for the women's marathon. This strongly favors the Africans--who were already going to beat Rupp anyway.
In the heat, the best shot at a medal is Meb for the US. My bet is for the US runners is....
Meb (3rd) in 2:10:27
Rupp (14th) in 2:14:56
Ward (18th) in 2:16:43
Ward is a smart racer. He will run consistently and place better than he should have. I'm predicting a top 12 finish for him.

Fair enough. I could see ward beating Galen if Galen has a bad day...which is almost certainly going to happen due to the weather and his stupid instance on doubling.

Total BS. His chances are much higher.
Galen does great in the heat. The hotter the better. Alberto has said that and we've seen it demonstrated repeatedly.
You say Meb has a better chance in the heat than Galen. Are you on crack? Did you not watch the Marathon Trials? Meb got his ass beat in hot weather.

EASILY the WORST prediction so far of the Olympics, but good job... please retire you handle.
RUPP is walking away with a MEDAL, very likely GOLD GOAT AMER

Why does the heat favor the Africans?
Who does the heat favor Meb (or is it because he's African)?
Sumgong dealt with the heat quite well, but Kenyans are pretty bad in the heat on the track, if we lump them all together.
While Rupp is pretty great in the heat/humidity...

Ha. Remember how many races Rump DNF'd or DNS'd 5-6 years ago. There was so much talk from Salazar about pollen count and severe allergies. Brought out mask boy.
Rumpers has always been a most fragile little flower. He will be dropped and he will fail.

Wait a sec here! The poster that said it would be hotter next Sunday than the women's marathon is full of sh*t!
It's actually foretasted to have a 90% chance of rain and be between 63 and 64 during the marathon! The high for next Sunday is 75!

Can The Elf King Place-
NOPE
Rupp trips 10 people, hits the wall at 20, and DNFs.

And yet Rupp's only marathon (trials) was a hot one and he beat Meb...
It is also not predicted to be very hot for the marathon.
he has a decent chance of medaling
FACT: Rupp will win GOLD.
Sorry, but if this isn't obvious to you then you do not understand this sport.
Top 5
Depends. If the weather is cool like the women's 10,000, then I think the field will fly and there'll be fewer up front fading and Rupp will finish 10th-15th and so will Meb.
But if weather is warm like the women's marathon, then I think Rupp and Meb will be patient and collect more fading scalps and they'll end up about 6th-10th.
Yes. I'll bet anyone $10 that he medals.
