And I loved the finish in the Olympic Stadium in keeping with tradition of most Olympic marathons.
Numerous Olympic marathon courses have had 180 degree turns, Helsinki in 1952 and Melbourne in 1956 both come to mind (from archival footage of those races)
Not sure what is wrong with turns? As Bill Rodgers once said, "the marathon should feature a variety of courses and be more like cross country."
I do miss the stadium finish though.
When I saw the thread, I thought it would be all about not enough turns and the lack of a single hill. The course was way too easy. Should have finished in the stadium also.
The course seemed really terrible, not necessarily for the layout but because there were so many spots with literally zero fans along the course. For a course made of up of nothing but 10K looks I expected to see a lot more spectators.
There were not many fans on large sections of the course in Atlanta in '96 either. Today wasn't so unusual, alas.
You must have started following the sport after February. At least the US women were well prepared.
London Olympic marathon course was worse.
Also Rome.
I would think the Antartica marathon course would be bad. Also Pikes Peak Marathon...
Olympic marathon courses should absolutely have at least one significant hill in the final 10K.
I remember Patti Dillon running her last marathon in Rio in 1985.
I think Dillon still reads the board.
What was that course like.
I also think the marathon should start around an hour before sunset.

It's Sunday morning. People are at home watching Arsenal versus Liverpool and other EPL teams that will not be mentioned.
should finish on track

That, too.
There has to be a more beautiful scenery than the streets around a mall. Is this the best Brazil has to offer?
Looks like the LA marathon trials. Just awful... Can run along the ocean?
There would be no safe way to have the course run in the area near the Olympic Stadium. And nobody would have been there to watch the finish even if there were.

We should accept that marathons are boring for people to watch. Running is a boring sort for spectators unless you can gamble on the winner like for horse races.
Loved this course - a good number of spectators around the 10km loops. As an athlete, I would have ranked this in my top 10.
