WRs being set in the heats (not even the semis, the HEATS)
Oldest swimming WR is like 8 years old
Dopers competing with no penalty
40ish events with medals (lol just lol)
Swimming is kind of a joke.

I thought track and cycling were bad but the amount of doping stories in swimming is just astounding. Almost every single race has some doper contending for a medal.
At least track "punishes" their dopers. In swimming, you can fail a test and still compete the next day.
But overall, swimming just looks like a joke. Nobody should have 19 gold medals, that's just silly. At least cut the number of events in half or something.
Track and Field has more events in the Olympics than Swimming.
Yes, but there is a huge range of body types and athletic skill sets between the marathon and 100m. In swimming it's just 4x100m fly, 100m fly, 4x400 breat breastroke, etc. All sprints, all basically the same skill set.
Swimmers are banned then they come back. How is that different than your great American sprinter who is competing in the Olympics after TWO suspensions?
Obviously IQ tests are not required to post on LR

"Nobody should have 19 medals?" Haha! Sorry that dude has put in the work day in/day out since he was about 5 years old. Also, sorry that every swimmer looks like a greek god, while every runner looks like a malnourished child. This message board is a perfect example of why distance runners are thought of as nothing but low-testerosterone, whiny little bitches
We see these same stupid arguments at every Olympics about swimming. It is a different sport than Track and Field. It has different requirements and parameters than Track and Field. I just get really tired of it.
If you don't like swimming, don't watch it. I'm not telling you that you have to like it.
Honestly I appreciate both swimming and track and field. I recognize that there are different requirements in each and the medals in swimming are different than the medals in track and field. It doesn't mean swimming is a joke. It just means it is different. I just don't see how people can't get that. (Well, mostly they just don't want to get it).

Don't be an idiot.
Don't dare respond to this comparing the number of events.

Yes, let's ignore facts when they are pointed out. Can't let anything get in the way of bashing swimming.

Swimming IS a joke.
I appreciate swimmers work hard and are great athletes, I don't deny that, but the sport itself is a joke.
Incredibly weak stance on dopers. Very small talent pool. Weak records. Sport is heavily influenced by pool technology (all the swimmers are way faster than 10 years ago) and too many events to spread the thin talent across.
Swimmers can just switch to a slightly different event (100 freestyle to 100 breaststroke for example) and win there if they face competition in the other event.
Bull. Shit.
There should only be freestyle. Push all the talent together.
This Adam Peaty covers the 100m way, way slower than the girls. He just does a stroke that deliberately retards progress. May as well do the 100m hopping race to let athletes that can't beat Bolt win Oly Gold.

Ah, yes, the ever-fresh hopping argument. Don't forget skipping and back-wards running as well.
Swimming IS a joke.

That was one of the dumbest, most uninformed posts I've ever read on this site. You're awarded zero points, and may god have mercy on your soul.
You know what, this 100m hurdle field is too deep. I think I'll switch to pole vaulting so I can win the gold.

Name a swimming doper who served no penalty.
Efimova (RUS) served her suspensions. Now, should they be longer? Perhaps, but you should learn about them as well.
Sun (CHN)? Again learn about them.
Also, not sure track folks should be tossing stones.
Doping cases in swimming:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Doping_cases_in_swimming
(53 total)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doping_cases_in_athletics
(didn't count all of those, but there are 15 just among the "z" Athletes).
Same WADA code. Same NADOs.
Shouldn't be complaining about dopers is right.
Everybody has forgotten Bolt's epic quote when asked how he compares himself to Phelps. Bolt said you can't compare the two because "he [Phelps] is a swimmer and I'm [Bolt] an athlete."
You have to respect Phelps for dominating the sport (even though he is probably doped to the gills...) for so long. But Bolt is correct, swimmers are just swimmers.
Did you not read the other posts? He is saying that swimming is a joke for the very reason that you can do that! Most swimmers can change to a different stroke discipline and be just fine... Athletics does not work that way.

Arguing two contradictory things:
1. Swimming is a joke because the athletes can double and triple
2. Swimming is a joke because you can switch events to avoid competition.
If all the athletes are able to double/triple/quadruple up, then they can't just switch to avoid the competition.
But keep bashing.
But you **CANT** do that in Track.(usually), Thats the point! No sprinter is going to enter the PV next week and be a champ. None. No marthoner is going to enter the TJ, no high jumper is going to enter the hammer throw.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
