Is it wrong that I refuse to work passed the time I'm scheduled to work?

Start your own business out of the garage / basement, etc, preferably cash basis.

How are your hours recorded? Do you clock in and out or do you write it down on a time sheet? Either way just record the hours that you actually work.

Also, if you are scheduled to work until close that does not mean your shift ends when the shop closes, that means you need to do all of the close out activities needed to wrap up for the day.

If this conflicts with your schedule then let the manager know and they either won't schedule you for closing shifts or they will ask you to quit.

Lastly, maybe your manager isn't a workaholic but instead actually does a good job of cleaning up at the end of the day.

Under the law, if you're working, you have to get paid for that time! If you have to stay, you should get paid. Put it on your time card. Keep doing this for a month or so. Turn your company into your state's department of labor (https://www.dol.gov/whd/contacts/state_of.htm). Get what you deserve!

When I was in college, I worked a crappy pizza shop job that would only pay you 15 minutes after the shop closed (no matter how late you stayed cleaning). Years later, I found out how illegal this was. Don't get screwed over like I did!

Oh, and while you're at it, learn the difference between "passed" and "past"

I can assure you the manager who stays 2 hours later is writing down his hours as leaving at 10:30pm and he is getting paid for that extra 2 hours. You should too. Odds are the manager is telling the store owner he works alone until 10:30pm. Start writing down you leave at 10:30pm when this happens.

Simply refusing to work is a poor solution. You are entitled to get paid for all the time you actually work. Tell the manager, or owner, or person scheduling you that you are have staying up to 2 hours after your shift ends. Ask him if he wants you to leave at the end of your scheduled hours or if he wants you to write down all the time you work.

You are not entitled to over time for this.

If this is a nearly one off happening it would be one thing but you aren't getting paid at all, not even the hourly $9.25? No, you aren't wrong for leaving at 8:30. Good for you for standing up to it. But it is "past," not "passed."

If you like the job and you just want it to end, tell the guy your mom wants you home by 8:45 PM every night. If it has been going on for a while and you want your money, sit down and talk to him. There is absoutely no reason you should work for free in an hourly job that has no future in it. The manager knows this.

When I was in high school, I worked at Blockbuster Video one year - yeah, we had video stores - and once a month we did inventory after closing. Somehow the normal hourly wage for employees went by the wayside for inventory and it was a lump sum. Each store was supposed to have one or two hourly employees help out, but the manager of my store used to tell us that we all had to do it and then she would have us do stupid crap like cleaning the place and doing all kinds of work that we weren't supposed to be doing. After doing this a few times, I realized that it came out to be like $5 an hour for work that went from 10:30 PM until close to 2 AM. I was in high school, remember...

So I finally told my boss that my mom didn't want me out past 10:00 PM and I never had to do it again. Easy solution and no need to fight.

However, if there's someone above the manager to speak to, do that first and just state the facts. "My shift ends at X and the manager has me sticking around until Y. I either need to get paid for sticking around or leave as scheduled. It's one or the other. Otherwise, this is a good job for me."

If there isn't, then tell the manager one more time. If conditions don't change immediately after, contact your State's department of labor to be clear on how reporting/reimbursement works in your State and keep fastidious records your State's labor department can use.

What the employer is doing is very illegal and unprofessional. Don't feel like you have to put up with it.

Are not getting paid at all, or not getting paid overtime (time and a half)? Most here are assuming you aren't getting paid at all.

Somethings not adding up.

You are working 25 hours/week.

You don't get paid overtime unless you work over 40 hours. Normal.

Now, overtime does mean the time you work over your scheduled shift. It means time worked over 40 hours in a week.

So, yeas you will get paid for the hours you work past your scheduled time.

we clock in on a computer and the manager says that by some Ohio law we do not get paid over time unless work over 40 hours. But I work at a corporate bike shop so the store policy tells us that it must always be two associates into close the shop.

Slavery was abolished a few years ago, bud. The Fair Labor Standards act was enacted to protect people like you. Google it.
