Butterfly is challenging.
Butterfly is challenging.
id say 2.4 mile butterfly
an iron man you dont have to go fast at all and just need some good mental endurance
Butterfly is the hardest strokes to swim slow. You can go more efficiently for distance by taking more than 1 or 2 kicks per stroke but overall swimming 2.4 miles of butterfly would be like running a marathon but having to pump your arms like a sprinter the entire time.
Non stop butterfly? If so, I say that is harder, because I think there is no chance I could go out and finish that right now, but I'm pretty sure I could suffer through an Ironman off of nonspecific training.

I guarantee that any decent distance runner with some swimming background (ex. club swimming for a few years, or swimming as crosstraining) would be able to finish and ironman via slow breaststroke or backstroke during the swim leg.
2.4 miles of butterfly is impossible even for many high level swimmers.
Vicky Keith swam the English channel using the butterfly stroke.
Former is called ironman and the latter should be termed ironwoman. Draw your own conclusions
If you know how to do butterfly properly, it's not a terrible long distance stroke. There's actually a 5k open water butterfly race in Chicago every year.
