Here's what Brannen said on Michigan's website:
On the 800-meter run prelims ... "With about 300 to go, I made a move to get to the lead with Rondell, and I got stepped on; so, I ran about 50 meters with half my shoe on and the rest kind of crumpled up underneath my foot. I kept trying to kick it off, because it was making it harder to run. Just before the bell lap, I got my shoe off, so I ran the last lap with one bare foot and one spike. Rondell came up on my shoulder on the last turn and got around me down the homestretch. I was pretty happy with how I felt, other than losing the shoe. I had a pretty hard time going around the bends with a bare foot on my outside."
That's why I quintuple-tie my shoes on TIGHT! No way those bad boys are coming off.
I triple knot...
Doesn't matter how tight you tie them, if your heel gets stepped on, they can still come off... I triple knot my shoes and it's happened to me.
I tie mine octuple times...haven't come off yet.
