What the f***? I'll admit that I never broke 5:00 in high school, though I only ran seriously for the last year. I ran 4:45 for 1500, which is roughly 5:05 for the mile. That works out to high-17 shape, which makes you a decent high school runner, though nothing anyone would remember. It was good enough to get me to the provincial championships (as part of a team).

As for the original question, I lived about 12 miles from my high school and the trek would've been on concrete through some fairly dirty, smelly and dangerous streets. Also, I'm not so retarded as to run 12 miles for no reason. If you live close to school, it's a good way of getting in an early morning run for those who do doubles. If you're a reasonably decent student, you can leave your stuff at school. Clearly there are nights when you do no homework.
