Pretty tough decision to make. Here's some background. Please take time to read it. I put this in bullets so it's easy to read.
-Turning 16 this August, going into junior year of high school.
-Freshman year played soccer (varsity during fall, basketball and indoor soccer during winter), and ran spring track.
-Went 2:11.4 for 800m and 5:00.8 for Mile, started to take the sport more seriously.
-Trained for soccer over summer...
Monday- Conditioning
Tuesday- Conditioning
Wednesday- Conditioning+3-6 mile hilly XC run in Woods
Thursday- Conditioning, Soccer Practice
Friday- Conditioning
Saturday- Off
Sunday- 2 games (District Select Soccer)
-During fall soccer season...
3 practices+2 games Monday-Friday, mixing in 2-3 easy runs of about 4 miles throughout the week
-December... started to work w/ new coach, built mileage up to 30-35 mpw with a base of easy running, tempos, hills, occasional interval sessions for indoor. Ran 2:11 for 800m and 4:52 in the Mile. Went to 5-6 meets at Boston University/Harvard/Reggie Lewis (MA) because my school was very small and doesn't have winter track. Ran half marathon with chest cold in early March (1:44:09), and called that the end of indoor season. Had active recovery week and distance reorientation next week.
-Spring season... First 2-3 weeks worked up mileage to 40-45 for early season, got runner's knee and was out 3 weeks.
-Came back in May running 2:17 800/5:17 Mile, didn't get strength back fully until mid-May. Got 800 down to 2:08 in early June, and ran 4:30 for 1500/4:52 mile before end of season. Feel like I could have been down to 4:45 if I continued with the 40-45 mpw without injury, but track doesn't have feelings so I carried on.
-Switching high schools this fall so I can better my education and improve on number of skills/do what is best for me. But, I've played with nearly everyone on the soccer team there.
-Starting XC camp through my coach this summer from 7/25 to 8/26 (after active recovery week and distance reorientation week) where I'll probably run 45-50 mpw, increasing my calorie intake+hydration+injury prevention.
VERDICT: My main question standing is if I should switch to cross country this fall or stay with soccer. I love both soccer and running, and I have gone through half a dozen different sports since I was 5-6 years old. Soccer and track have been the last standing. For soccer, I love the feeling of the ball against my foot, and playing center back (defense) where I have confidence to take control of any situation and facilitate the field. The thrill of scoring or assisting a goal is awesome. But at the same time, running is also what I love. It's taught me lessons I could not have learned anywhere else, and it's taught me to be dedicated to something despite setbacks if I truly want it that bad. But at the same time, is taking 9-11 weeks of just running going to inhibit my success as a runner? I've seen distance runners have great success despite not running year round, such as Andrew Wheating and Grant Fisher who both played soccer. I could run (at most) 30 mpw and go to 6 XC invitationals in the fall if I continue with soccer and have fun as part of a familiar team that I enjoy and have talent in. Or I do what I love and get my way into the mid-high 16 minute range for 5k as a three seasons/year round runner this year, and prepare myself for the greater volume of running in college. I've tried to weigh the pros and cons, but don't know where to go.
