I've read about the greats doing this. Basically it is 400m repeats at 5k pace with 3 minutes of rest. Rinse and repeat until you aren't hitting your pace anymore
Have any of you tried this? Would there be a better 5k workout to do?

1 minute rest

It is not 1 minute rest. Because the whole point of this workout is to get upwards of 15-20k of quality 5k pace work in and to do that you must have long rests
1000m repeats in the same fashion.
0 seconds rest

1000m at 5k with 6 minutes of rest. Repeat until you can't hit the splits?

So this is a 3-4 hr workout?
Might be effective if you can handle it. You'll probably need a gallon of gatorade and maybe even some food.
Have you ever jogged continuously for 4 hrs? Honestly the repeats might actually make it easier once you go above the 2 hr mark. You definitely don't want to be jogging recoveries for this.

I meant to reply to this in my post above.
3 minutes of rest make the workout almost unbearable if you're trying to get 15-20k in.
If you're going to take 3 minutes rest, might as well split it into two sessions for a double day since you're going to be on the track for 4 hours to get 20K of pace work in.
And if you're gonna split it into 2 sessions, might as well cut down on the rest anyway.

Some of the greats have done it and it does turn out to be about 2-3 hours of total running. 3 minutes of rest is just standing/walking not jogging. Might be something to try. Definitely will be hard and will stress the body pretty good

I definitely think it could be a valuable workout for those who can handle it. The kind of workout that brings you to the next level.
Though I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's not in shape to comfortably and regularly run 2+ hrs at a non-jogging pace.

I actually like to do something like this in place of a steady run when I'm coming back into shape after a long break. But, I'll just go for 70-80 minutes and most of the 400s will end up being 200s.
Who says quarters???? You must be old.
