Just curious, but how many people who check out this board were running in 1983? That seemed to be an amazing year of marathon running in the United States. Was that simply because of the 1984 Games being held in LA and it was post-boycott inspiration?
That was 20 years ago. The sport has seemed to change a lot in many ways from a financial perspective, but I wonder how much of the influence has been by our culture, other countries runners, the economy, etc. It's seems in the other distance events we have as many if not more guys then ever running as fast or faster then that year (800m, 1500m, mile, 3kst, 5000m, 10000m) and in a given year we can be in the top 3 in the World XC team champs if we load the teams.
One thing is for sure 20 years ago there was not the mass foriegn presence at every road race in America like there is today. Even on the college level, I doubt there was over 500 foreign runners in the US colleges in 1983 like there is in 2003, not to mention a huge cut in men's cross country and track scholarships combined with the rising cost of educations over those 20 years.
