Did you see that? That's what happens when you kick way too early.

Uh, that wasn't a kick.
It was his only chance to win. The earlier he went, the better shot he had. However I think it's good he didn't make the team. If he had made the team and elected to run the 5 over the marathon it would have been another 6-7 place finish. However with the marathon, it is very unknown for him. And anything can happen in a marathon.

I have a new respect for Rupp. He's obviously our best distance runner and thought he could pull away over a long kick. Not to be, but he gave it a shot.

Why did Rupp run a third event, and try to win it?

themanontherun must be new here. If you don't win all the events, you go home DEVASTATED!!! The OP even forgot to use all caps and missed an exclamation point.
I agree. I don't know why he would risk it. He was going to Rio in two events, but risked it for third and now he's done. At least he's young enough to still be running strong in 2020.
Kick too early? He's been training for a marathon. He had no business being out there in the race to begin with, as MANY people have been saying for the past week. No surprise he didn't make the team.

Young, Rupp??? He is 30 with very high mileage, and a lot of that intense. That is what you saw today; much like Salazar did just not having it anymore suddenly.
A "new" respect? This guy has deserved American distance running fans' respect for years now. He races more than basically anybody and he's always had guts.
Maybe you're right, but it just sucks to see someone who has worked hard and seemed to have a lot of momentum go down like that. In case he doesn't get to run in the Olympics again at least he had success in 2012.
You spelled Ryan Hill wrong
I think Rupp would have liked to win but did not really train for the 5k. It was plain that the was not serious about making the team or running the 5k in Rio. He tried to use a mile long drive to win it, which was maybe his best shot since he is strong but not fast. Pace was too slow overall though and I think the others knew it - they certainly had no trouble erasing that 8 M gap on the last lap. I don't think he was devastated at all. He probably considered it a workout more than a race to be won at all costs.
I do wonder if he even has the closing speed needed to seriously contend for a medal in the 10K. He will need some speed sharpening between now and Rio if he really intends the double, but there is time.
Has Rupp or Salazar said which Rupp will run in Rio? I'm guessing marathon is his best shot at a medal.

If Rupp wants to compete at a high level he needs to focus on one event, not two, and not three. That is what was obvious from the 5k. Father Time said hello to Rupp real hard.

He's definitely doing 10k, and mostly likely the marathon as well.

Rupp should pick one event to maximize his chances. I would say the marathon but since he has committed to running the Amsterdam Marathon, just two months after Rio, maybe the 10k is his best bet. Or, he needs to drop Amsterdam and run the Rio Marathon, then set his sights on a spring marathon (Boston?).

He was likely working a predetermined Nike scheme. That was 0.06 from perfection.
He was never running the OG 5000. If you doubt Rupp cant do better than 61 to close a 5000, you're delusional.
I highly respect Galen Rupp and he is my favorite runner. His performance was impressive during these trials.
He would dominate all American competition if he decided to focus solely on one of the distances (1500-marathon) for the trials.
Des Linden: "The entire sport" has changed since she first started running Boston.
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
