We are typing our recap and about to come to blows over this argument so we might as well open it up to you.
Who makes the team without the fall.
Robert and I are adamant Kate Grace is on it. She won the race. Jon and Steve aren't sure as they said she was boxed in. No one stays boxed for 100m is my response and Kate beat everyone so even if the 2 who got impacted the most by the fall beat her, she still is 3rd.
I would say Ludlow and B.mart. For some reason, Wilson doesn't look very fantastic at the homestretch

contrary to what others think on here, I actually saw Montano surprisingly re-accelerating into the turn though - it's a shame as it would have been a fun finish.

dont know that she would have stayed boxed, but dont know that she would have found the same line. wilson clearly shut it down, although not until grace was past her. but had martinez and ludlow been on her shoulder, might have been a different reaction, and earlier. and ludlow closed a tad faster than grace, despite the chaos. think its reasonably safe to say grace wouldnt have won. as for what happens between martinez/grace/wilson--probably lean slightly in favor of martinez/wilson. but really not sure what wilson was doing, so will say ludlow, martinez, grace, in that order.

Agree! Ludlow had to jump to the side to avoid falling herself. This impeded her momentum and Oly spot.

Martinez would not have made it. She looked decent at the time but she was all out w/ 250 to go and was about to blow up.

I am convinced Martinez would have gotten at least second. It is entirely conceivable that she would lose out to someone on her inside, who simply had to run less with 120m to go. However, regardless of order, Martinez/Wilson/Grace strikes me as the right (and ideal) combination. Though I also will concede the interesting points that Ludlow may have made it over Wilson.
I know plenty of people have expressed their frustrations, but it really needs to be said again: this is an appalling result to what should have been a thrilling final. I am myself a Yalie, and a big Kate Grace fan, but what happened to Brenda Martinez--a former WC medalist in the 800m--is utterly egregious.
USATF, ever the emblem of incompetence, needs a system in place to deal with situations of this nature. I am sure Williams is a wonderful person and an excellent runner, but there is no doubt in my mind that 1) she would not have made the team had Martinez not gotten clipped by Montano; and 2) Martinez would be on the team right now.
The Mens fall that got us under the waterfall or the fall because Montano played 10pins with the competition?
or perhaps the guy in the leading pack who fell twice in the mens steeple?
How you are so adamant about Grace? I agree that its highly likely she is on the team and that she may have won it anyway without the fall. She outkicked the others in the race down the stretch. But she was a big beneficiary of the fall like no one else. Just before the fall she was back in 6th or 7th on the inside with no clear path to the front. Raevyn Rogers had the inside blocked off. But Rogers got caught up in the jostling. She stumbled to the outside leaving a clear lane for Grace. By the time the runners came out of the curve suddenly Grace was in the front, free and clear and was never phased by it all.

Why is everyone engaging in conjecture? No one knows what might have transpired. This is an exercise in uselessness. Get over it! So many bad things happening in the world and you want to guess what may have happened if something else had not happened? Just so silly. Grow up people!

Pity u select your athletes for the Olympics the way u do because you are not sending the best possible team not that it will matter because Caster and Niyonsabo and one or two Kenyans or an Eastern European who comes out of the blue or a Russian that sneaks through will destroy the field. Not fair for Martinez or Montano though who clearly deserve to be going to Rio.

Why? If the same thing happened at Olympics would they medal? Trials are based on results not speculation. This isn't the first time someone fell or got tripped up and it won't be the last.
Martinez wins if Montano hadn't tripped her. Montano was rigging badly after going out too fast - over-strided and clipped Martinez - ruining Martinez's chance.
